With more electric cars on sale than ever before, there’s a huge range of options for new car buyers. Here are some of the best electric car brands to consider.
Volkswagen is one of the most well-known automakers in the world and has a growing portfolio of electric cars to choose from. Check out our 2022 Volkswagen ID.3 review to find out more about this model’s strong range, practical interior and impressive level of standard equipment.
1. Volkswagen ID.3
Volkswagen has been building electric cars since the 1990s, but it was only recently that VW’s first fully-electric car, the ID.3, was produced. As well as being the first purpose-built EV, it is the brand’s first carbon neutral car and a major step change for VW.
A good battery range means you can go all day without running out of power, while rapid charging is possible with a 100kW DC unit, enabling 180 miles to be added in just half an hour. It also has a spacious interior with almost the same levels of space as a Golf and a decent boot.
2. Porsche Taycan
Porsche’s first electric vehicle, the Taycan, has a number of features that make it stand out from its competitors. For instance, it is the first electric car to have a system voltage of 800 instead of 400, allowing it to charge more quickly and efficiently.
The automaker also focused on sustainability, making the interior of the Taycan leather-free and using recycled materials. It’s also made from thinner-gauge copper wires that reduce the unsprung weight and allow for shorter charging times.
It’s a thrill to drive and offers an EPA-rated range of 203 miles. However, it can take 11 hours to fully recharge its larger 93 kilowatt-hour battery from a 240-volt home charger.
3. BMW i7
BMW isn’t the first company to introduce an all-electric luxury sedan, but the 2023 i7 could be its best yet. It features next-gen infotainment, driver assists, and rear seat technology to give it a serious edge over rivals such as the Tesla Model S and Mercedes-Benz EQS.
The i7 also offers an innovative battery design that gives it a range of around 300 miles per charge. It can also be charged quickly at DC fast charging stations, adding about 80 miles to its driving range in just 10 minutes.
4. Ford F-150 Lightning
The Ford F-150 Lightning is the first electric truck in the company’s lineup, and it has a lot of class-exclusive features that set it apart from competitors. It is designed to win over longtime Ford truck buyers with its versatility and impressive bag of tricks.
The truck’s cabin feels just like the one in a regular F-150, with plenty of head and leg room for people of all sizes to get comfortable. The rear seat is also more spacious than in some other EVs, with 43.6 inches of space to move around.
5. Mercedes-Benz EQC
The Mercedes-Benz EQC is the German brand’s first-ever series production electric car. Its bold exterior looks blend the capable appearance of a crossover SUV with the elegant profile of a sports coupe, and it’s a great example of how a premium manufacturer can make an EV that’s impressively refined and comfortable.
Its interior is as luxurious as you would expect from a Mercedes, with soft-touch plastics, premium upholstery and seat bolstering all adding to its appeal. But it’s also a very reliable vehicle that is easy to drive.
6. IONIQ 5
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is a smart-looking, comfortable and well-appointed electric car that is sure to turn heads and win over buyers. Available in four trim levels, it comes standard with a wide range of features and safety options.
The interior is a big, bright and airy space, with a minimalist design aesthetic that doesn’t lose sight of functionality. The infotainment system features quick response times, crisp graphics and nifty customization options.
7. Ford Mustang Mach-E
The Ford Mustang Mach-E offers a mix of features and benefits, from an incredibly fast 0 to 60 time (3.5 seconds on the base model) and comfortable seating for five to ample space to haul cargo. That’s not to mention its electric powertrain delivering up to 346 horsepower.
It’s also a lot of fun to drive. You can choose between three driving modes-Active, Whisper, and Untamed – that adjust throttle response, steering, acceleration and deceleration, stability control, efficiency, and final drive.
